How to Stay True to Yourself in Business

Staying true to yourself in business with Megan Winkler

Everyone’s got a different way to do business. Some coaches will even tell you that their way is the best way to do it. I don’t know about you, but given the chance, I’d rather carve my own path through the business wilderness than just take someone’s word for it and follow their plan to the letter. I just feel better about myself as a person and business owner when I’m staying true to myself.

Have you ever felt pressured to change something in your business?

A client of mine recently shared that her mastermind leader told her she needs to have certain offerings in her business. She needs to market her program in a certain way. Except…what she’s doing now is working for her!

How do I remain true to myself and keep up with new ideas?

On the one hand, it's important to embrace change and adapt to new trends and developments. On the other hand, it's equally crucial to stay true to your core values and unique selling proposition. Simply following the latest trends or copying what others are doing may lead to a loss of authenticity and differentiation.

So, how can you find the balance between embracing change and staying true to yourself in business? Here are a few tips:

  • Identify your core values and unique selling proposition. What makes you and your business unique? What do you value most? Once you have a clear understanding of your core values and unique selling proposition, you can make decisions about change that are aligned with your authentic self.

  • Seek advice from trusted mentors or industry experts. Getting different perspectives can be helpful, but it's important to remember that not all advice is applicable to every situation. Ultimately, the decision of whether or not to embrace change should be yours to make, based on your own business goals and values.

  • Don't be afraid to experiment. It's okay to try new things, but don't abandon your proven strategies completely. Instead, look for ways to integrate new ideas and strategies that complement your existing strengths.

  • Be consistent. When you stay true to what works for you, you build a reputation and establish a level of trust with your audience and customers. People are drawn to authenticity because it signals honesty and reliability. If you constantly change who you are or how you do business based on the opinions of others, you risk losing that trust and credibility.

Is it better to be authentic in business?

Remember, authenticity is a powerful differentiator in business. By staying true to yourself, you position yourself to stand out from the crowd and build a long-term successful business.

Here are a few additional tips to help you stay true to yourself in business:

  • Be honest and transparent. Don't try to be someone you're not. People can spot a fake from a mile away, and it will only hurt your business in the long run.

  • Be yourself. Let your personality shine through in your business. People are more likely to connect with you and do business with you if they feel like they know you and like you.

  • Be passionate about what you do. If you're not passionate about your business, it will show. Choose a niche that you're truly interested in and excited about.

  • Don't be afraid to say no. It's okay to turn down projects or clients that aren't a good fit for your business. Focus on what you're good at and what you enjoy, and the rest will follow.

Staying true to yourself in business is not always easy, but it's worth it. When you're authentic, you're more likely to build strong relationships with customers and clients, and you'll be more likely to achieve your business goals.
